The Different Sizes of Tennis Courts
It’s a game that showcases some of the biggest names in the sport in Australia and beyond, but how much do you know about the sizes, divisions and measurements of tennis courts?
More than just two racquets, a net and a few wayward tennis balls, when it comes down to it, the biggest aspect of the game lies within the tennis courts themselves.
Whether you’re looking to build tennis courts for your backyard, sporting arena or local club down the road, Ultra Courts has all the information about the different sizes, divisions, measurements and the all-important net height. Let’s get right into the details.
Tennis court sizes
A tennis court which is rectangular in shape and then divided in half by a net, measures 23.77m in length and this applies to both singles and doubles courts.
Singles and doubles courts can feature on the same surface, with the biggest difference being the court markings that differentiate the spaces used for singles games and doubles games.
A tennis court overall width is usually 10.97m, which applies to the dimensions of a doubles playing surface. The width of the singles court is 8.23m, allowing for the singles game lines to sit 1.37m inside the doubles markings.
The net dividing the court is 12.8m in width and sits at a height of .91m at the centre and 1.07m high at the posts on each side.
A court will also feature a run-off area of 3m on each side around the perimeter to ensure the safety of players and a smoothly played game.
Tennis court surfaces
If you have ventured out onto a tennis court, you have likely noticed there are different surface types, including grass, clay or hard. Each has its own playing characteristics with grass generally better for faster games, clay is known for a slower-paced game and a hard court usually falls somewhere in the middle.
