International Women’s Day – Famous Female Tennis Stars
There’s a reason the Australian Open is one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Not only does Australia have a history of tennis, but we also have some of the best players in the world. Additionally, some of the best female sports stars in the game.
As International Women’s Day approaches, we’re looking back at the amazing accomplishments of some of Australia’s most decorated athletes to step foot on a tennis court.

Margaret Court
With 64 grand slam titles under her belt, there’s a reason Margaret Court is considered one of the best players of all time.
Not only was she ranked No.1 in both singles and doubles (a rare feat for tennis), but her tennis career also spanned a huge 17 years.
Court is not just a representative for Australian female stars, but one of the most distinguished athletes in Australian sport.
Evonne Goolagong
Evonne Goolagong was the first Indigenous Australian to receive worldwide recognition in tennis.
In addition, she also came away with 14 grand slam titles in singles and doubles.
Goolagong was also the first mother to win a major title and is considered one of Australia’s best players.
Sam Stosur
The former No.1 in Australian tennis held the position for a staggering 61 consecutive weeks. Sam Stosur holds 5 grand slam titles and represented Australia in the 2012 and 2021 Olympics. With a 23-year-long career, Stosur has an amazing legacy in tennis’s history.
Ash Barty
With her recent retirement from tennis, we thought we’d kick off with one of the country’s favourites.
Ash Barty has won 4 grand slam titles and left tennis behind ranked No.1.
In 2020 she represented Australia in the Olympics and came away with a bronze medal.
Ajla Tomljanovic
Most recently, Tomljanovic became known for beating Serena Williams in her last-ever tennis match.
Outside of this, Tomljanovic has been steadily rising through the ranks, gaining some impressive results as a player.
Despite not being a title winner, she recently ranked an impressive No.30 in the world!
