Different types of tennis Court Surfaces
Considering building your own tennis court? The surface will impact your quality of play for years. Let’s discuss the types of tennis court surfaces available.
The surface of your tennis court must be carefully considered. As you know, every professional player excels on a different surface. Whether you’re playing for leisure or competitively, let’s look at the different types of tennis court surfaces.
The four main types of tennis court surfaces are grass, hard court (concrete), clay and artificial grass.
Grass
You probably know that the Wimbledon Championship is the only Grand Slam event played on grass. Some of the fastest serves happen on grass because of its slippery surface. The ball has a lower bounce due to soil being softer than other materials. The bounce of the ball is unpredictable because of the soft and uneven nature of grass. This favours a player who is proficient at serving and volleying.
Hard
Asphalt and concrete are the most common types of hard court. The ball travels at a slower speed than on grass but has a predictably high bounce because the surface is flat. The hard court is considered a good surface for players of any level, as it’s a middle ground between grass and clay. Players that favour any style of play can benefit from a hard court.
Clay
Most will attribute clay to Rafael Nadal, but what is it about this surface that’s different? The French Open utilises clay, and it produces the slowest ball speed and skid reduction, making it easier for the opponent to return the shot. The dusty service causes the ball to bounce higher as well.
Artificial grass
Synthetic grass is a popular choice for home courts because of its easier maintenance and high-quality play in all weather conditions. It can endure wear and tear, while the smoothness and superior bounce prevents serious injuries and shocks to the joints. It can even be somewhat customised to suit each player.
